We meet in the historic town of Prince Albert and embark on an unforgettable full-day adventure to Gamkaskloof, famously known as Die Hel, a hidden valley carved deep within the ancient Swartberg Mountains. While it's only 60 km from Prince Albert, prepare for a journey many worlds away.

Your adventure takes you on the Swartberg Pass, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an 1880s engineering marvel. Wind your way up kilometers of gravel, past dry-stone walls built by convict labor, with panoramic views that stretch across the Great Karoo and then turn off to Die Hel, for 37kms of unspoilt beauty.

Towards the end of this road, descend into the unknown. The Gamkaskloof Pass, or Elands Pass, is a heart-pounding 600m descent of narrow, winding gravel track with sheer drop-offs and over 50 bends. It's not just a road; it's a passage through time, leading you to a valley that remained isolated for over a century.

At the bottom, discover the  20-kilometer-long valley which is just 600 meters wide. Enjoy a light lunch and hear the captivating stories of the Klowers—the canyon dwellers—from a direct descendant who still calls this remote valley home.

This is more than a scenic drive; it's a profound journey into South Africa's rugged beauty and resilient spirit. Return via the Swartberg Pass, your soul enriched by breathtaking vistas, the chance to spot klipspringers and Verreaux’s eagles, and the quiet magic of a place few ever reach.

Emerging in the Little Karoo, you'll pass through the tranquil village of De Rust before a highlight stop at De Rustica, a multi-award-winning olive estate. Then, the adventure truly begins. Your gravel road ascends to the base of the Swartberg Pass, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a masterpiece of 19th-century engineering by Thomas Bain.
